Planning a Project? Here’s How to Get the Foundations Right.

At A H Denny, we’ve been around long enough to know that a family home is more than just a building project—it’s an investment in your future. As a family-run business, we take it personally when we walk onto a site. We know that starting a renovation or a new build can feel overwhelming, so we wanted to share a few bits of advice on how to get things moving in the right direction.

1. Focus on what’s behind the walls

It’s easy to get excited about the new kitchen or the bathroom tiles, but the most important part of any project is what you can’t see. The plumbing and electrical work is the engine room of your home.

Before we start, think about how you’ll actually live in the space. Do you need extra sockets for the kids' gadgets? Is the water pressure up to scratch for that new rainfall shower? Getting the "first-fix" right is the secret to a house that actually works for your family.

2. We speak your language (mostly!)

We know that trade lingo can sound like a different language. That’s why we include a Glossary of Terms with every A H Denny quote. If you see terms like "PC Sums" or "Professional Services," don’t worry—we’ve explained them at the bottom of the quote. We want you to feel confident in exactly what you’re paying for before the first tool is lifted.

3. Budget for the "Surprises"

In our experience, especially with older homes, you never quite know what’s waiting behind a wall or under a floorboard until you get in there. We always recommend keeping a small "contingency" in your budget. If we find some old DIY wiring or a hidden leak, having that buffer means the project keeps moving without the stress.

4. Honest billing for honest work

We believe in transparency. That’s why we invoice for work completed to date. It means you’re always up to speed with the project’s progress, and you’ll know exactly what’s left to pay for the final stages. No guesswork, just clear communication from our family to yours.

5. Let’s have a chat

The best part of being a family business is the relationships we build with our clients. If you’re unsure about a plan or want to know the best way to tackle a tricky room, just ask us. We’re here to help you get the best result for your home.

Ready to start your next project? Whether it's a full rewire, a new heating system, or a complete renovation, the team at A H Denny is ready to help.
